What You Need To Know About Stomach Cancer!

Stomach cancer is a type of cancer that arises from the stomach (any part of it). It can be categorized into two main types- diffuse and intestinal. The diffuse type of stomach cancer is mostly found in women or in people whose blood group is A. It is more challenging to treat this kind of cancer in comparison to the other cancer. Intestinal cancer, on the other hand, is common in older patients.

Worldwide, about 800,000 people die due to the ailment; this is because its prognosis is quite poor. Therefore, it is more common than we realize.

Symptoms and signs-

Stomach cancer does not produce any noticeable symptoms in the initial stages. Or it may produce symptoms that are not definite of stomach cancer alone. This makes early detection difficult and by the time indications begin to occur, it has already reached a developed stage or may have spread to other body parts as well.

There are various signs that the patient exhibits (depending on the stages). They are as follows-

>  Stage 1 – Early

-          Burning sensation or indigestion
-          Decreased or complete loss of appetite
-          Abdominal irritation or discomfort

> Stage 2 – Middle

-          Fatigue or weakness
-          Bloating after having a meal

>  Stage 3- Advanced

-          Pain in the abdomen (usually upper)
-          Occasional vomiting or nausea
-          Weight loss
-          Blood in vomit or stool
-          Constipation or diarrhea

These symptoms are similar to those caused by stomach ulcers, food poisoning or various other conditions and are therefore, not diagnosed early.

Causes-

The Helicobacter pylori infection causes stomach cancer in most people. There is chronic inflammation of the stomach which makes it potentially cancerous.
Certain foods, such as salted meat and fish, pickled vegetables and smoked foods are known to put the person at a higher risk.
Smoking also puts one at the risk of gastric cancer which develops around the upper part i.e. near the esophagus.

Stages of stomach cancer-

Stage 0- In this, only the inner lining of the stomach is affected.
Stage 1- Cancer penetrates to the second or even the third layer of the patients’ stomach or to the close by lymph nodes.
Stage 2- Cancer moves to the distant lymph nodes or even to all the four layers but not the lymph nodes.
Stage 3- Penetrates to the nearby tissues
Stage 4- Cancer now spreads to the other organs as well.

Adrenocortical Carcinoma : There is never an end

What is adrenocortical carcinoma?

Adrenocortical carcinoma also called as adrenocortical cancer or cancer of the adrenal cortex, is a very rare form of cancer that originates in the outer layer of tissue of the adrenal gland. Adrenal gland is a small organ situated on the top of each kidney and is responsible for producing steroid hormones, adrenaline, and noradrenaline to control heart rate, blood pressure, and other body functions like balancing water and salt in body, controlling the body's use of protein, fat, and carbohydrates, etc.

What are the different types of adrenocortical carcinoma?

Adrenocortical cancer is usually classified as functioning or non-functioning, depending on the elaboration of adrenocortical hormones (glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids, androgens, estrogens, rarely a host of possible peptides).
  • Functioning: In this form of cancer, hormones produced are more than the normal.

  • Non-functioning: In this form of cancer, hormones are not produced at all.

Another classification of adrenocortical cancers divides them into the following variants:
  • Sporadic, and

  • Syndromic: These variants occur with multiple cancer predisposition syndromes, like Gardner syndrome, Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1, the SBLA syndrome, and Li-Fraumeni syndrome.

Other classifications are based on the cellular origin of the neoplasm.

What are the causes?

So far, no possible causes of cancer has been discovered although there is a small minority of patients with a hereditary component that can be related to genetic syndromes, such as those with p53 gene abnormalities.

Who is at risk?

Although there is no fixed scale, there are few studies that suggest that following factors may put you at more risk of getting this disease:
  • If you are a female
  • If you are are a child under age 5
  • If you are between the age of 40-50
  • In case, you have a hereditary disease that can affect your adrenal glands
  • Have another form of cancer

What are the symptoms?

The exact symptoms vary depending on whether the cancer is functioning or non-functioning. The symptoms of functioning tumor depend on what hormones it is producing. For instance, if it is producing Testosterone and other androgen, you will observe increased facial and body hair and deepened voice in females; and if it is producing estrogen, you will see early signs of puberty in children. Non functioning tumors may not produce any hormonal changes or cause specific symptoms.

What are the treatments?

As with other cancers, the exact treatment procedure depends on stage of your cancer and your overall health. The usual treatments like immunotherapy for cancer, chemotherapy for cancer, surgery, radiation and biologic therapy.

The A to Z of Lung Cancer

The uncontrolled and abnormal growth of cells in the tissues of the human lungs is known as lung cancer. If it is left untreated, this malicious growth spreads beyond to other tissues and body parts, through a process known as metastasis.

In normal conditions, the human body maintains a system of check and balance on the growth of cells, i.e. new cells are produced only when they are needed. However, under atypical circumstances, this system gets disrupted, resulting in an uncontrolled multiplication of cells, which eventually leads to the formation of a mass like tumor.

Tumors can be malignant or benign, so when we are talking in terms of cancer, the malignant ones are being referred to. These tumors have an aggressive growth and invade the body in a very life threatening way.

The two main types of lung cancer-

1.       Small cell lung carcinoma (SCLC)
2.       Non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC)

Causes of lung cancer-

There are various causes responsible for lung cancer. Broadly, they can be categorized as under-

1.     Main cause of Lung cancer- Smoking is one of the leading causes of lung cancer. Tobacco use for an extended period causes about 80-90% cases of lung cancers. Tobacco contains approximately 4000 chemical compounds, of which polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and nitrosamines are the primary cancer-causing agents.

Passive Smoking - Inhaling smoke from external sources by nonsmokers is known as passive smoking. It is also a well known factor in the growth of lung cancer. Residing with a cigarette smoker significantly increase your chances of contracting the disease.

2.       Asbestos - Exposure to asbestos causes a number of lung ailments, lung cancer being one of them. In old times, one’s workplace was a major source of getting exposed to it, however, its use has been banned in a number of countries, considering its fatal effect on people’s health.

3.       Radon Gas - When radioactive radium faces a breakdown, it generates an odorless and colorless gas known as Radon gas. It is a product of naturally decayed uranium. It emits a kind of ionizing radiation, and travels through soil to enter homes due to gaps in drains, pipes, foundations and several other openings.

4.       Air Pollution - Not as significant as the other factors, but extreme and constant exposure to exhaust fumes can cause lung cancer in some people.

5.       Genetics - The genetic susceptibility of certain individuals makes them prone to lung cancer. Studies have shown that both non smoking and smoking people have developed the ailment due to familial history.
