What You Need To Know About Stomach Cancer!

Stomach cancer is a type of cancer that arises from the stomach (any part of it). It can be categorized into two main types- diffuse and intestinal. The diffuse type of stomach cancer is mostly found in women or in people whose blood group is A. It is more challenging to treat this kind of cancer in comparison to the other cancer. Intestinal cancer, on the other hand, is common in older patients.

Worldwide, about 800,000 people die due to the ailment; this is because its prognosis is quite poor. Therefore, it is more common than we realize.

Symptoms and signs-

Stomach cancer does not produce any noticeable symptoms in the initial stages. Or it may produce symptoms that are not definite of stomach cancer alone. This makes early detection difficult and by the time indications begin to occur, it has already reached a developed stage or may have spread to other body parts as well.

There are various signs that the patient exhibits (depending on the stages). They are as follows-

>  Stage 1 – Early

-          Burning sensation or indigestion
-          Decreased or complete loss of appetite
-          Abdominal irritation or discomfort

> Stage 2 – Middle

-          Fatigue or weakness
-          Bloating after having a meal

>  Stage 3- Advanced

-          Pain in the abdomen (usually upper)
-          Occasional vomiting or nausea
-          Weight loss
-          Blood in vomit or stool
-          Constipation or diarrhea

These symptoms are similar to those caused by stomach ulcers, food poisoning or various other conditions and are therefore, not diagnosed early.

Causes-

The Helicobacter pylori infection causes stomach cancer in most people. There is chronic inflammation of the stomach which makes it potentially cancerous.
Certain foods, such as salted meat and fish, pickled vegetables and smoked foods are known to put the person at a higher risk.
Smoking also puts one at the risk of gastric cancer which develops around the upper part i.e. near the esophagus.

Stages of stomach cancer-

Stage 0- In this, only the inner lining of the stomach is affected.
Stage 1- Cancer penetrates to the second or even the third layer of the patients’ stomach or to the close by lymph nodes.
Stage 2- Cancer moves to the distant lymph nodes or even to all the four layers but not the lymph nodes.
Stage 3- Penetrates to the nearby tissues
